Severus Snape, Potions Master

January 18, 2012

Snape as Potions Master

A filk by Valeria-Johanna of a traditional ballad, Sam Hall. It’s sung here by Valeria-Johanna, who also made the artwork.

‘Sam Hall’ (or ‘Jack Hall’) is a ballad, originally 18th century English, though it exists in a number of variations, including one sung by Johnny Cash. It belongs to the genre known as a ‘Last Goodnight’, purporting to be the words of a condemned man on his way to the gallows. Although this is not exactly Snape’s position, I think it must be very much the way he feels towards the end of ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’, when he goes off, his cold, black eyes glittering, to carry out his unspecified dangerous task.

The lyrics are here.

For the sequel, you can listen to ‘The Double Agent’.

I like the way you’ve done the potion. It gives a lively quality to the picture.

  2. Thank you! The bubbles were cut from some sheets of assorted sticky-backed stars that I bought in a stationery and art shop. (The green stars supplied the bubbles for Snape’s potion, and the red ones provided the rubies in the handle of the Sword of Gryffindor: http://wp.me/p20CYA-d.) – V-J

You’re very creative, it’s the sort of way we used to work when doing artwork in the Children’s library, I can remember putting loads of gold stars directly onto the long blue display board when I was making a Santa Claus flying through the night sky on his sleigh pulled by reindeer. And for Santa I tore up bits of paper for the fur trim on his outfit, it gave a much better finish, quite 3D

  4. Yes, it’s fun when you find materials to use in unexpected ways, as we found with the Sword of Gryffindor in the frozen pond (slightly worn and cracked document wallet!). – V-J

Wow, now that I can see it in a larger size, it is even more amazing than I first thought. Such detail. The potion really does add so much to the picture.

  6. Thank you! I am currently working on some artwork for some other songs, mainly of a Snapeish nature. – V-J

    Can’t wait to see it!
