Lyrics: Fresh Pickled Toad

February 21, 2012

Toad ValentineFRESH PICKLED TOAD (OR, HOW I MET YOUR FATHER)

words by Valeria-Johanna,
to the tune of ‘The Foggy, Foggy Dew’ (traditional)

(You can listen to the song here.)

When I was just a little girl, saw your uncles off to school,
I noticed one of the big boys there and thought he looked so cool.
Imagine my excitement then when I found out his name!
I liked Harry Potter at the very first sight, and still I feel the same.

When I was just eleven years old, as George delights to tell,
I sent your Dad a singing valentine which made his school life Hell:
‘His eyes are as green as a fresh pickled toad, his hair is as dark as a blackboard.
I wish he was mine, he’s really divine, the hero who conquered the Dark Lord.’

I think he guessed who sent it, but he didn’t bear a grudge.
He solved the basilisk mystery, in spite of Lockhart and Fudge.
He saved me from that creature’s lair, just like a handsome prince;
He fought for me then with Gryffindor’s Sword and we’ve fought for each other ever since.

Now he’s a famous auror, and I’m a Quidditch star:
But to you I’m just your mother of course, and Harry’s just your Pa.
But his eyes are still green as a fresh pickled toad, though his hair’s like a dusty blackboard:
I’m so glad he’s mine, he’s still divine, and he really did conquer the Dark Lord.

And now we’ve got you splendid kids, James and Lily and Al,
And you know we feel so proud of you, and of course we always shall.
James, they say, looks like Harry’s Dad, and Lily’s a lot like me,
With bright red hair like Harry’s Mum and all my family—

And then there’s Albus Severus, who seems inclined to worry:
I often think when I look into his eyes of how I met my Harry!
For his eyes are as green as a fresh pickled toad, his hair is as dark as a blackboard.
I’m glad you’re all mine, you’re really divine, the reason we conquered the Dark Lord!
