Three Ravens (and a Silver Doe)

May 7, 2012

Three Ravens sitting on a branchI have always loved the strange, wonderful and tragic folk ballad, ‘The Three Ravens’; but since July 2007 the slain knight and the devoted fallow doe (representing the knight’s ‘leman’ or lover) have been inextricably linked in my mind with Severus Snape and his beautiful Patronus. So it didn’t take very much re-writing to turn the song into a lament for Severus.
For the original lyrics, and the complex history of the song, click here. The tune I use is that noted down in the earliest printed version, by Thomas Ravenscroft in 1611. – Valeria-Johanna
